Gucci Unique Heritage Collection at Via Condotti Rome

This Gucci Unique Heritage Collection, including handbags, luggage and scarf, is to celebrate the unveiling of recently renovated Rome store-Via Condotti. This one-of-a-kind accessories collection is a combination of Gucci's skilled artisan techniques and its unparallel luxury goods expertise.

Its creative director Frida Giannini has created a collection of five new handbags that represent the ultimate in the design house's luxury product offering. These bags relied on Gucci's iconic handbags models and a striking vintage print called "Rinascimento", which was inspired by the rigorous beauty of Renaissance motifs. Deep red and dark green flowers, thorny spires and crowns dance across a creamy canvas background with striking effect. It is what the conventional style is about. But Giannini marries the playful canvas print with a precious, wine colored crocodile.

In various models, the rich crocodile skin covers handles, sides, flaps and trims of handbags, complementing the whimsical print while adding and irresistible luxuriousness. Other precious skins like ostrich, python and crocodile powerfully display Gucci's luxury know-how. The five different handbag models, including the Jackie and the bamboo, are considered classic models in a modern light. Each bag is crafted in incredible soft leather, features beautiful details and visibly exquisite craftsmanship. Bamboo handles and clasps, artisan stitching, and subtle touches of gold hardware finish off the elegant look.

A scarf and a series of small leather goods in exotic skins make a charming addition to the collection. Two classic wallet shapes are offered in python, crocodile and ostrich make the perfect add-on accessory, together with other mini handbags for clipping on to the larger bags. Besides, an elegant set of brown crocodile hard case luggage, a beauty case and a jewelry case also released to embody the extreme elegant and luxuriousness of crocodile skin, which is a nod to the grandeur of chic traveling essentials of the last century. The notable large crocodile traveling trunk with drawers and hanging space is destined to be a collector's item.

Gucci By Gucci

Gucci By Gucci

What's your opinions and images of Gucci? Just the name conjures up images of la dolce vita-Cinecitta stars strolling on the Via Condotti; Jackie O and her signature bag; the Studio 54 chant "Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci"; Tom Ford's sexy, minimalist era, during which stars and socialites lined up to wear his clothes; and now the fresh and joyous vision of Frida Giannini, the line's new creative director.

Gucci by Gucci opens the fabled house's archives for the first time, bringing together-in the form of bags, clothes, accessories, and a dazzling cache of documentary photographs-the history of the Florentine family-owned saddler that has imprinted its name on the fashion consciousness. Both a history of the company and a glorious visual exploration of its far-reaching influence, the book is a treat for the collector and the fan.

Fashion Fueled by Family: The Legend of Gucci

When you consider the magnitude of the esteemed Gucci brand today, it's hard to believe it started out as a small leather-making shop in Florence, Italy. The shop was opened by Guccio Gucci, son of a leather craftsman, in 1906. Guccio exhibited the same talents his father possessed, making functional pieces that reflected his exposure to European designs.

Initially, Guccio crafted leather bags to be used by traveling horsemen. Later, after travelers began using horseless carriages, he transitioned to upscale leather luggage. The first Gucci retail shop was opened in 1938, located on the scenic Via Condotti in Rome. Guccio himself designed much of the inventory sold at the first shop.

In 1947, Gucci unveiled its leather handbag with bamboo handle, the internationally recognizable piece that enjoys continued popularity today. This was followed by the now famous red striped webbing that also signifies the brand. During the 1950s, Guccio went on to design several of the famous handbags and accessories that brought the fashion house to the heights of popularity and prestige. Fine Gucci purses, luggage pieces, ties, jewelry, scarves, and other accessories comprised the company's offerings.

After the death of Guccio Gucci in 1953, his family opened stores in several key locations throughout the world, including Beverly Hills, Paris, Tokyo, London, and Palm Beach. During the 1960s, the brand enjoyed an increase in popularity and prestige when several notable celebrities and public figures -- Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Peter Sellers, and Jackie Kennedy, to name a few -- lent their personas to promoting the Gucci brand. Grace Kelly even sported a custom "Flora" foulard designed especially for her by Rodolfo Gucci. It was during this time that the now universally recognizable "GG" logo was developed in honor of the late founder Guccio Gucci.

A Company in Crisis

While the Gucci brand may have been thriving, behind closed doors the company was suffering due to family infighting and poor management. Meetings often led to shouting matches and rash business decisions. Bankruptcy was a real concern by the late 1970s. In 1993, brother Mauricio Gucci sold the ailing business to a holding company.

A Fresh Start

With the designation of Tom Ford as chief designer in the 1990s, the Gucci brand was reinvented, enjoying a return to its initial lofty status and chic appeal. With the launch of Ford's new line in 1995 and endorsements from several top celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna, the fashion house again became one of the most exclusive in the world. A publicly traded company, modern-day Gucci offers a vast array of high-end Gucci purses, travel bags, wallets, sunglasses, colognes, accessories, and footwear.

History of a Fashion Icon: The Story of Gucci

A Modest Beginning

It's hard to believe that such a prestigious international fashion icon had such humble beginnings! In 1906, Guccio Gucci started a small saddlery shop in Florence, Italy. Born into a family with a history of leather making, Guccio was a talented leather craftsman with an eye for European design flair.

Guccio started out designing leather horseman bags during the days of horse-drawn carriages. As the modes of transportation evolved, he eventually expanded his offerings to include premium leather luggage. It wasn't until 1938 that the first Gucci retail shop opened its doors in Rome on the Via Condotti. Many of the original products sold at that first shop were handcrafted by Guccio himself.

Growth of a Fashion Legend

The universally recognizable leather Gucci bag with its bamboo handle was first introduced to the fashion world in 1947. Several years later, the brand's distinctive red striped webbing became another of its hallmarks. The 1950s was a banner decade for the Gucci brand, during which Guccio developed many of the timeless classics that remain popular today. In addition to legendary handbags, he continued to craft luxury travel pieces, footwear, ties, and other accessories.

090323-others-history-of-a-fashion-icon-the-story-of-gucciWhen founder Guccio Gucci died in 1953, his sons capitalized on his stellar reputation by opening stores in several prominent cities throughout the country, including Beverly Hills, Paris, Palm Beach, London, and Tokyo. Throughout the 1960s, the brand enjoyed celebrity-endorsed prominence as such notable figures as Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Peter Sellers, and Jackie Kennedy were seen wearing Gucci handbags and apparel. Rodolfo Gucci even designed the custom "Flora" foulard especially for Grace Kelly. The famous "GG" logo was developed to commemorate the memory of founded Guccio Gucci, and continues on as the company's trademark today.

Turbulent Times

In spite of the fashion house's prestigious image and international brand recognition, internal conflict and mismanagement threatened the company's welfare. The Gucci family was notorious for their heated debates, clashing personalities, and rash business decisions. By the late 1970s, the fashion house was dangerously close to bankruptcy. One of the brothers, Maurizio Gucci, eventually sold the struggling business to Investcorp, a holding company, in 1993.

A New Beginning

It wasn't until the 1990s, when Tom Ford was named Gucci's new CEO, that the fashion house enjoyed a resurgence of its original popularity and prestige. Ford's chic new collection in 1995, combined with the pop-culture appeal of celebrity endorsements by the likes of Madonna and Drew Barrymore, helped the brand regain its sense of exclusivity. Today, Gucci is a publicly traded company with a diverse array of designer Gucci handbags, luggage, wallets, sunglasses, apparel, colognes, and footwear, among other offerings.

The Rocky Road to Success: The History of Gucci

090323-others-the-rocky-road-to-success-the-history-of-gucciHumble Beginnings

Gucci may be one of the world's most widespread and prestigious brands today, but when it got its beginnings in 1906 it was a much smaller enterprise. Founder Guccio Gucci opened a small saddlery shop in 1906. Living in Florence, Italy, Guccio paired his family-inherited leather making skills with his modern European design tendencies.

Initially, Guccio sold leather bags to the horsemen who needed a place for their travel essentials. As horse-drawn carriages gave way to more modern modes of transport, he began designing contemporary leather luggage pieces. In 1983, he opened the first official Gucci retail shop on the Via Condotti in Rome. A majority of the inventory at that first shop was made by Guccio.

Explosion of a Style Legend

In 1947, the famous Gucci handbag with its trademark bamboo handle hit the fashion world, eventually serving to represent the brand. The widely recognizable red striped webbing was soon to follow. Throughout the 1950s, the Gucci brand enjoyed widespread success and acclaim. It was during this decade that Guccio produced some of the age-old hallmark favorites that continue to generate international demand today. Although the focus was on Gucci handbags, he also made high-end luggage, shoes, jewelry, scarves, and other premier accessories.

When Guccio passed away in 1953, the Gucci family (namely, his sons) went on to open several high-end retail stores in Beverly Hills, Paris, Palm Beach, London, and Tokyo. Over the course of the next decade, the Gucci name was bolstered by the support of several big-name celebrities and figures, including Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Peter Sellers, and Jackie Kennedy. The "Flora" foulard, designed especially for Grace Kelly by Rodolfo Gucci, was a famous custom piece. In the 1960s, the universally recognizable "GG" logo was launched, memorializing the company's founder, Guccio Gucci. Today, the logo continues to serve as the trademark of the Gucci brand.

Family Upheaval

To all appearances, the Gucci brand was enjoying the ultimate in success and prosperity. But behind the scenes, family conflict and poor business management put the company in jeopardy. There are many accounts of fiery debates and flaring tempers, with business meetings often ending with furniture being thrown around the room. Bankruptcy was looming by the late 1970s and early 1980s. The besieged company was eventually sold to a holding company in 1993.

The Dawn of a New Era

With the appointment of Tom Ford as lead designer in the late 1990s, the Gucci brand began its ascent back to its previous lofty status. Ford launched a widely popular new line in 1995, which was bolstered by a sleek advertising campaign featuring endorsements by the likes of Madonna and Drew Barrymore, returning the brand to its original distinction. It was in that same year that Gucci was made a publicly traded company. Today, Gucci enjoys a consistent demand for its designer Gucci purses, luggage, wallets, sunglasses, apparel, colognes, and footwear.
